Sheffield Wednesday edged out by Portsmouth at Hillsborough
Sheffield Wednesday were narrowly beaten at Hillsborough as Portsmouth claimed a 1–0 victory thanks to a second-half goal from Adrian Segecic.
The Owls started brightly and created several promising moments in the first half, pressing high and forcing turnovers in advanced areas, but were unable to convert their opportunities.
Wednesday went close through Jamal Lowe, while Svante Ingelsson was also unable to find the target after being played through by Barry Bannan. Portsmouth threatened on the counter, with Nicolas Schmid producing a strong save to keep the scores level before the break.
The decisive moment came as the game approached the hour mark, when Segecic found space inside the area and fired into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead.
Wednesday struggled to create clear chances after falling behind and finished the game with just one shot on target. Portsmouth managed the closing stages effectively to secure their first league win of 2026.
After the match, Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen said his side showed encouraging signs but must improve their cutting edge, while Portsmouth manager John Mousinho praised his team’s control after taking the lead.
