Sheffield taxi drivers raise safety fears over reported attacks
Taxi and private hire drivers in Sheffield say they are increasingly avoiding certain parts of the city amid reports of violent incidents while on duty. Representatives from the trade claim drivers have been targeted with objects such as bricks, causing damage to vehicles and raising serious concerns about personal safety.
Drivers have described incidents where they felt unsafe while working, with some saying the situation has had a significant impact on their wellbeing. The trade has warned that parts of the city are becoming difficult to serve, which could affect access to transport for local residents.
Sheffield City Council and local authorities are aware of the concerns being raised. Discussions are reportedly taking place involving council officials, South Yorkshire Police and representatives from the taxi industry to explore possible measures to improve safety.
Potential responses being discussed include increased police presence in affected areas and community-led initiatives aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour. No specific measures have yet been confirmed.
