Train journeys and station parking affected by Sheffield bridge works
Passengers travelling by train in Sheffield are being advised to plan ahead as journey times and station parking will be affected by major engineering work.
Network Rail is replacing a life-expired steel bridge deck that carries the railway over the River Sheaf at Beauchief. The core phase of the work will take place over the weekend of Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March, affecting services between Sheffield and Chesterfield.
Preparatory work began in January and includes the installation of scaffolding, delivery of materials and the construction of a temporary crane pad. A compound has also been set up at Dore & Totley station, resulting in changes to parking arrangements.
During the main weekend of work, a 73-tonne bridge deck will be lifted into place by crane. Around 60 metres of track will also be renewed using new sleepers and ballast.
East Midlands Railway will operate an amended and reduced service between Sheffield and London St Pancras, with longer journey times expected between Sheffield and Chesterfield. Amended services will also run between Sheffield and Nottingham, and Nottingham and Norwich.
Northern will run rail replacement buses between Sheffield and Chesterfield during the works. Passengers are advised to check their journeys before travelling and allow extra time.
Station parking at Dore & Totley will be affected in phases, including a full closure between 6 February and 20 March. Alternative parking is available at Abbeydale Sports Club, with pedestrian access remaining in place throughout the project.
The project is expected to be completed and the station car park fully restored by the end of April.
