A Sheffield mum, Karen Grayson, has spoken out about her disabled son being left “a prisoner in his own home” for months due to a lack of accessibility support from Sheffield City Council.
Her son, who recently had both legs amputated, is unable to leave his flat in Parson Cross because there is no ramp or suitable access for his wheelchair.
The situation has become so serious that South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has warned it could pose a fire risk, as he is unable to exit the property in an emergency — and is also a smoker.
Karen told reporters that her son’s wheelchair cannot fit through the kitchen doorway, meaning he’s confined to one room. While recovering from major surgery, he also fell into around £900 of rent arrears, which has delayed efforts to move him to more suitable accommodation.
Two alternative council homes have reportedly been offered — but one was too far from family support, and another was found to be in poor condition with mould and steep steps
