New Sheffield Station Road Layout to Be Trialled to Ease Congestion
A new road layout will be trialled outside Sheffield railway station in an effort to reduce congestion and improve access for station users.
Sheffield City Council plans to prevent private cars from using the existing drop-off area, creating short-stay parking bays on Cross Turner Street instead. The aim is to free the forecourt for taxis and reduce long-standing traffic issues.
The temporary measures will begin in mid-January and run for 18 months under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. Traffic flow, public safety and community feedback will be closely monitored throughout the trial.
The council says the current layout has caused heavy congestion, conflict between taxis and private vehicles, poor air quality, and access problems for neighbouring communities.
South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard recently described the station layout as “a mess” and welcomed efforts to improve the arrival experience for passengers.
