A football supporter, Mark Townsend, aged 57, tragically died after suffering a cardiac arrest at Hillsborough Stadium during a Championship fixture in 2024.
Mr Townsend, a West Bromwich Albion fan, collapsed in the away end at the Leppings Lane stand. Fellow supporter and GP Dr Richard Stones was the first to administer CPR, later describing the treatment he witnessed as “horrific” and a “shambles.”
However, Lewis Wright, managing director of Lambda Medical – the private ambulance firm contracted to provide medical cover at Sheffield Wednesday fixtures – strongly denied those claims. He said the response was “almost textbook” given the difficult environment, adding that Townsend was moved to the concourse where a defibrillator delivered two shocks before its battery failed.
Despite the efforts of medics and supporters, Mr Townsend could not be revived.
