Arson fire closes Wellgate in Rotherham
A street in Rotherham was closed yesterday morning after firefighters confirmed a deliberate fire on Wellgate.
Emergency services were called to the scene at about 4 a.m., where crews from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service worked to extinguish a blaze that police now say was arson.
Wellgate was shut in both directions while fire and police investigations took place, with officers cordoning off the area to protect public safety. The extent of damage to the property and nearby buildings is being assessed.
South Yorkshire Police have launched a criminal investigation and are appealing for anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area around the time of the incident to come forward.
Residents were advised to avoid the area while emergency work continued, and local traffic was affected with diversions in place. Further updates on the investigation and the reopening of the road are expected.
