Sheffield Hallam students back SU stance on staff strikes
Students at Sheffield Hallam University have voted in favour of introducing a new priority within the Students’ Union to support striking staff and lobby university management over budget cuts.
The decision followed a petition signed by more than 50 students opposing the cuts and was approved at an emergency policy forum. The new priority will replace one of the six existing policy positions set by student officers.
Since 2024, the university has implemented around £40 million in cost-saving measures, which have resulted in the loss of approximately 1,000 staff roles. Students have raised concerns about the impact on support services and teaching provision, including removed course modules, larger class sizes, increased staff workloads, and more online classes.
The vote comes despite the university recently unveiling two new buildings and confirming plans for a satellite campus in Brent Cross, London, scheduled to open in 2026.
